In this
sensitively written autobiography , the author looks back without
bitterness to a childhood and youth spent in the mean streets of a
London Suburb and in L,C.C elementry and secondary schools during the
first two decades of the 20th century .
'We were the first
generation' he writes , 'to live our whole educational life under the
blessings of state education,' and he traces the path of his generation
from infants' school to university .
It was not an easy route to
follow, and Mr Burton writes vividly of the cramping conditions of his
youth and the sense of social inferiority which remained with him
throughout his years of Cambridge. Nor did the struggle end there. Writing
in middle age, Mr Burton explores the nebulous status of those whom
state education has led out of a limited home environment into a more
spacious world , only to leave them stranded in a society which has not
yet evolved a real place for them. H M Burton , who has
established a reputation in several fields - education , authorship ,
broadcasting , publishing - writes affectionately and vividly of the
people and places he has know .
